On Monday, we kick-off Campaign Ads for Voters, our major first semester project which culminates in presenting student-produced campaign commercials to registered voters the night before the election on November 4. For inspiration, we look at examples of campaign commercials from actual presidential races and from Envision students who did this project two years ago.
Over the course of the week, you need to study what is on the November ballot, identify which ballot initiatives you might like to focus on, and present your preferences in a proposal as Writing Assignment #3: Ballot Review, due Friday.
We spend most of class time this week going over the ballot together and learning some concepts that are key to understanding these propositions, including the history behind the initiative process, bonds, and federalism. We also learn terms that help us to analyze and form arguments: logos (appeals to logic), pathos (appeals to emotion), and ethos (appeals to trust).
In World Literature, we deepen our understanding of the major literary eras by looking at representative poems, mainly on Friday.
