Week 29: April 21–25

On Thurs./Fri., we begin our practice with timed on-demand writing. You will have a 40-minute in-class essay to write on one of the following prompts:

• Compare and contrast the author’s writing style and tone in two of the four short stories we have read.
• Explain how the feeling of alienation affects the characters from our short story reading. Explain why the characters feel alienated or why the author wrote the characters to feel that way.

Take some time to prepare; review the four stories and sketch out some ideas and potential outlines. As a reminder, the four stories are the following:

• Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin
• “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” by Ernest Hemingway
• Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates
• A & P by John Updike
