We plunge into our reading of Crime and Punishment this week. It is vital that you establish a disciplined reading regimen. It is a big book, and our reading pace is brisk. But as students soon to enter college, you are up to the challenge. Remember, we are taking a month to read the novel: that’s only 22 pages a day.
I am turning in third quarter grades at the end of the week, so get your missing assignments in before Friday. A missing Dante essay will trigger an NC. We review what goes into your quarter grade on Monday.
Monday continues our introduction to Crime and Punishment. We review Chapter 1 together. A quickwrite on the difference between right and wrong gets us thinking about some of the novel’s major themes. We end class with some work on the Running in Place unit in economics.
Expect a small quiz on Chapter 2 of Crime and Punishment for Tuesday. Continuing our practice with tight writing, we examine the difference between clauses and phrases, and between independent and dependent clauses. We wrap up the Running in Place unit with presentations on ways to set up the hypothetical running shoe company.
Thursday is third quarter rubric day: get your work in and avoid having to give yourself an NC. We discuss our reading of chapters 3 and 4 of Crime and Punishment.
By Friday you finish Part I of Crime and Punishment. We discuss the murder scene.
