Notes

Government is a political association that does two things:

  1. It makes rules determining who will get the valued things of a society.
  2. It alone regulates the use of legitimate force in society.

autocracy – rule by one (also monarchy)
oligarchy – rule by few
democracy – rule by many (the people)

democracy — a form of government in which the people (citizens), directly or through their chosen representatives, regularly indicate their political preferences for how they are governed.

pure, or direct, democracy — the public participates directly in the making of public policy
republic, or representative democracy — the public elects leaders who represent them in governing bodies and decide policy through debate and deliberation

Logos: the logic used to support a claim; the reasons and evidence used support the argument
Pathos: the emotional or motivational appeals; vivid language, emotional language and numerous sensory details
Ethos: the source’s credibility or trustworthiness, the speaker’s/author’s authority

swing voter — a voter who has not made up his or her mind on a given issue or candidate, or a voter who could be persuaded to change his or her mind
target voter — the intended audience of a campaign marketing effort, usually a specific demographic group (e.g. white Republican women aged 40–60)

world view — underlying belief system that shapes how a person interprets the world and interacts with it
